Maxwell Lord is a man of business at heart. Whether he's running a business or a squad of superheroes, Max does it with skill and that strange sort of way of thought that a manager has. He cares for his underlings employees, though, and tries to ensure their good health. Practical, clever, smart, and with a nose for money-and-power-making, Max is a force to be reckoned with, and that's before his minor superpower and his cyborg body come into play.

At this point in his life, Max is in charge of the Super-buddies, a 'common man's' superhero team, with L-Ron as his lackey. Before this, Max was the man behind the JLI and it's UN sanction, which he started at the behest of an evil supercomputer. After Max destroyed the computer, he gained his current power, mental domination, during the invasion of the Dominators, from a "gene bomb" that did all sorts of stuff. Later on, Max was shot, lost his job as the coordinator of the JLI because of this, regained his job, lost it again, developed brain cancer, died from it, got revived as an evil cyborg, lost the evil thing, and is the man to thank for giving the JLI Booster Gold.

He has a form of mental control that he can, and has, used to 'push' people to agree with him. This causes a nosebleed, however, and takes a toll on him. He is also a cyborg, and is therefore very tough and strong.
